AI Search Visibility: Why Ranking on Google Isn't Enough Anymore
A growing share of people looking for an accountant are now asking an AI assistant instead of typing into a search bar. That changes what "visibility" means.
For years, “getting found online” meant one thing for a professional services firm: ranking well on Google. That’s still important — but it’s no longer the whole picture.
More people are starting their search for services, including accounting and tax help, inside AI assistants and AI-powered search results rather than a traditional list of blue links. When someone asks an AI tool to “find a good CPA firm for a small business in my area,” the answer it gives comes from somewhere — and if a firm’s information isn’t structured in a way that’s easy for that system to understand, it simply doesn’t get mentioned.
What AI search actually looks at
AI-powered search tools tend to favor sites that are:
- Clear about what the business actually does and who it serves, stated plainly rather than buried in marketing language.
- Structured with schema markup, the behind-the-scenes data that tells a search engine or AI system “this is a professional service, this is who it serves, this is what it offers” in a machine-readable way.
- Consistent across the web — the same business name, service description, and details appearing accurately on the firm’s site, directories, and profiles.
- Backed by real, specific content — pages that answer real questions a potential client would ask, rather than generic stock copy.
What this means practically
It means a firm’s website needs to do double duty: read well to a human visitor, and be legible to an AI system trying to summarize what the firm does and who it’s a good fit for. That includes structured data, clear service pages, consistent business information, and content that actually answers the questions prospective clients are asking.
It also means visibility isn’t a one-time project. Search behavior is shifting quickly, and firms that treat their online presence as something to set up once and forget will fall behind firms that keep it current.
The firms that show up in these new AI-driven answers now have an early advantage — not because they’re bigger, but because they made their information easy to find and easy to understand, before most competitors thought to.
